Magnificent Ambersons, The (1942) IMDB rating: 8.00 Plot: The young, handsome, but somewhat wild Eugene Morgan wants to marry Isabel Amberson, daughter of a rich upper-class family, but she instead marries dull and steady Wilbur Minafer. Their only child, George, grows up a spoiled brat. Years later, Eugene comes back, now a mature widower and a successful automobile maker. After Wilbur dies, Eugene again asks Isabel to marry him, and she is receptive. But George resents the attentions paid to his mother, and he and his whacko aunt Fanny manage to sabotage the romance. What could be cut out of these paragraphs that would help streamline the story?
Jonathan was disgusted as Hinton tottered drunkenly against the galley wall slopping some unrecognizable greasy mess into a stinking cauldron. A not too few oily drops splashed onto the galley stove?s scorching hot brass railing and sizzled into oblivion as dark smoking freckles. Heavy beads of sweat rolled down his apish features and fell onto his filthy brown once white shirt. He dug ruthlessly in his nose, grinning stupidly at the treasures he found there. Hinton?s repulsive manner made Jonathan?s skin crawl. He despised the man and the fact that he was being forced to work with this mindless creature. Hinton turned and then grinned, and without warning, striking Jonathan a heavy blow across his right cheek, and sent him sprawling to the galley floor. Jonathan?s mouth filled with blood, and it oozed out in heavy strings between his teeth and puddled onto the dark and grimy deck. He reeled as his cheek began to swell and tried to regain his footing but Hinton stepped back and kicked, burying his right foot deep in Jonathan?s stomach blasting the wind from his lungs. He coughed, spraying more blood across the galley floor and tried to suck air, but got nothing. ?You watching me boy? ?You looking at me with them preacher?s eyes, judging me?? Hinton slurred. ?Stand up, and clean the mess you made, yer bleeding all over me clean galley floor.? Jonathan turned his head and stared defiantly at the filthy cook with a white hot hate, burning holes into his attacker. Hinton glared, balled up a fist, and drove down hard into Jonathan?s wounded cheek. His whole world exploded into a blinding galaxy of stars.
After an eternity of nothingness he found himself on the main deck choking on the salty ice water that filled his mouth, nostrils and lungs. Jonathan opened his eyes, gagging and coughing only to see the empty canvas bucket that lay beside him. Hazy voices blended together jumbled into a meaningless puzzle. Hinton?s voice cut through the foggy consciousness; ??sleepin on the job sir! ?not my fault! …my dooty is to train?um right sir!? Jonathan turned just in time to see Captain England deliver a firm kick to Hinton?s backside. ?Back to your hovel dog!? commanded the captain pointing at the galley. ?Misuse another cabin boy and I?ll have you scrapin? barnacles from the keel at full sail. Understand you drunken sot?? Hinton groveled, submissively touching his forelock in obedience ?Oh sir yes sir I understand sir?; he looked around scanning the deck for witnesses, and soon after he scurried away like a spider into his filthy den.
Jonathan sat up sluggishly and rolled back over onto his right side coughing. Captain England strode over and pushed him onto his back with a polished boot, and looked down. ?To my cabin, and be quick about it boy.? The captain then stepped over the collapsed bucket and vanished between the large doors below the helm. Jonathan?s head swam in a sea of pain and confusion. With an agonizing effort he finally sat up, rolled onto his knees and with no little trouble he stood erect. He grimly stumbled holding his side through the doors following the captain.

Well, you have an awful lot of adjectives in there, several of them redundant to getting your message across as you discribe it better elsewhere. For example;

"A not too few oily drops splashed onto the galley stove?s scorching hot brass railing and sizzled into oblivion as dark smoking freckles"

"A not too few" - pointlessly long winded, what was wrong with the word ’several’?

"scorching hot brass railing and sizzled into oblivion as dark smoking freckles" - the ’scorching hot’ is redundant to getting your message across as having the oil sizzles on it is a nicely graphic way of saying ‘it’s scorching hot’. You could also cut out "oblivion as", it’s jarringly dramatic to no particular purpose.

"Several oily drops splashed onto the galley stove?s brass railing and sizzled into dark smoking freckles." Is much easier to read, while still describing the exact same thing.

"Hinton turned and then grinned, and without warning, striking Jonathan a heavy blow across his right cheek, and sent him sprawling to the galley floor. Jonathan?s mouth filled with blood, and it oozed out in heavy strings between his teeth and puddled onto the dark and grimy deck" 3 ands and a comma joiner in one sentence? Plus, stiking is the wrong tense (present, while rest of the story is in the past tense).

Try - "Hinton turned grinning and struck Jonathan a heavy blow. He sprawled across the galley floor. Blood oozed out between his teeth to join the grime on the deck" 48 words down to 28.

Try doing a version with no adjectives at all, and then put a select few back in to spice up your descriptions. (I got a quick count of over 30 adjectives - that’s way too many for a 500 odd word piece). Rewrite the sentences that have 2 or more joining word like ‘and’ or ‘but’ or a joining comma - you should only have 1 joiner a sentence.

Hello! Just wanted to share some videos of some fabulous chinese traditional dances from the recent Taoli Cup competitions (high level dance competition in China).

Some clarifications: China is comprised of a multitude of ethnic minority groups, each with its own unique style. Chinese traditional dance has its own traditions and while some styles/technique may resemble western ballet/modern dance, it is definitely not the same so try not to say stuff like "her pirouettes look weird" lol.

Samsung slim external USB DVD writer on really old computer?
My laptop has 128mb RAM, 4.8gb hard drive (with about 1.5gb available) and windows 2000.

It only has 1 USB port built in to it so i have to use a 4 port hub.

I installed the firmware manager thing and updated it untill i there were no more updates.

I installed the drivers with the found new hardware wizard and rebooted my computer.

This is where the problems start.

First, when i did the reboot, with the dvd writer plugged in, i couldnt get past the windows 2000 loading page. unplugged i can do a restart. plugged in I CAN, however do what i think is called a hard reboot, where i actually turn the computer off then turn it on.

Ok, now either if i turn it on with the device plugged in, or unplugged then plug it in after it has loaded everything, a compact disc (H) drive appears on my computer, then shortly dissapears.

When I put a disc (music Cd to start testing all the different discs) in, it doesnt load it, but when i take the disc out, it says i unsafely removed the DVD writer.

I cannot afford to sneak on my landlords comuter all the time to burn discs so, can this drive be used on this computer? if so, is there a fix for my current problems????

I really would like to help the needy out for the holidays?
Well for the last couple of days, I’v been sitting in my room thinking of things that "I" want for christmas. But then something just suddenly striked me. I’m worrying about getting a new cell phone, a new room, new clothes, new whatever. But then theres billions of people out there..who don’t even have a single pair of socks. well you get the point. & I really upsetted myself and im asshamed. I want to help out children around my district, like go to a homeless shelter or something and read stories, give presents, whatever to the young children. I just really want to do something good this christmas. oh and i’m 13. Do you know any charaties that will allow me to do this, I live in PA.

That’s great!! My advice would be to check with any local churches. I know at my church we are doing several things to help out families during Christmas time. Some of those are like Christmas angels where there is are a list of names of children that live in families that can’t afford Christmas, by the child’s there will be a name of a toy that they really want. People can go out and donate the toys to the children. Or another thing that churches sometimes do is Samaritans Purses. Basically what you do is take a empty shoe box and fill it with candy and toys. Take it to the church and it will be shipped across seas to children that may not ever get a Christmas present.
