help with some physics problems?
1) Collectible coins are sometimes plated with gold to enhance their beauty and value. Consider a commemorative quarter-dollar advertised for sale at $4.98. It has a diameter of 20.4 mm, a thickness of 1.78 mm, and is completely covered with a layer of pure gold 0.145 ?m thick. The volume of the plating is equal to the thickness of the layer times the area to which it is applied. The patterns on the faces of the coin and the grooves on its edge have a negligible effect on its area. Assume the price of gold is $10.0 per gram. Find the cost of the gold added to the coin.

2)A highway curve forms a section of a circle. A car goes around the curve. Its dashboard compass shows that the car is initially heading due east. After it travels 840 m, it is heading 30.5? south of east. Find the radius of curvature of its path. Suggestion: Use s = r ? where ? is in radians.

appreciate any help at all in understanding these. thanks

For the first one you need the density of gold, and the surface area of the coin: (2*pi*(10.2mm)^2) + (pi*20.4mm*1.78mm). By the way the actual price of gold is well over $30.00 per gram.

Supposedly, for her own protection, Rachel is locked up in a secure mental health facility. How many influences does Star Wars have?
So far I’ve got these:
James Earle Jones, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing were British horror actors of the 60’s. Darth Vader rising in SW3 is like Frankenstein, plus he wears a cape, like Dracula. The arms getting cut off device is remniscent of Samurai movies. The intros, planets, and wipe transitions are from Flash Gordon. Yoda and Obi-
Wan dissapear when they die, like the Wicked Witch, and C-3PO and Chewbacca are remniscent of the tin woodsman and the cowardly lion. Luke and Obi-Wan are the classic old mentor- young learner. The Force is fantasy. The technology is sci- fi. Stormtrooper is a Nazi term. The hood that Sidious wears is reflective of many visions of the grim reaper. The walkers are inspired by The War of the Worlds. It has the story of Caesar (starts out as a democracy, becomes an empire, rebels turn it into a democracy again). The Phantom Menace was inspired by a Flash Gordon episode title.

Is there anything else?

Lucas continually references two main influences in Star Wars:

the mythic themes came from the works of Joseph Campbell (see The Hero with 1000 Faces), and the narrative structure (telling an epic story from the POV of minor/background characters, eg R2D2 and C3PO) came from the Japanese movie The Hidden Fortress

Little Kidnappers, The (1990)

IMDB rating: 5.00

Plot: Loosely based on a ’50’s movie of the same name, it tells the story of two young orphan boys who travel by themselves from the Old country to join their father’s family in Canada. There they encounter their stern disciplinarian grandfather who has alienated himself from some of his neighbors. There is particularly no love lost between the grandfather and his Dutch neighbors, who he generalizes as being responsible for his son’s death in the Boor War. A side product of this animosity is that it is keeping apart the boy’s aunt and her Dutch doctor suitor. The two boys change everything though when they find a young baby on the beach…

I need help figuring out a book title.?
In 8th grade (I think) I read this really good book that I can’t remember the title of. The book was about a girl that had gotten kidnapped and the whole book was about her explaining what the people were doing, and how she was feeling. In the beginining, she was obviously feeling scared. The threw her into the basement and I remember her talking about a very small window that she couldn’t see much out of. And there was a small cot that she slept on. Towards the middle, the people were being really nice to her. This whole time, she was figuring out a way to escape.

Spoiler alert:
In the end of the book, she somehow got out and ran upstairs into the living room. I remember there being cops there and the kidnappers were yelling crazy things about how she’s the one that’s crazy and that they didn’t kidnap her, blah blah. (That could be a little off, it’s been four years since I read it.)

I remember the title being like "The Kidnapping of.." I swore it was Samantha something, but I can’t find anything along the lines of that. If you know what this book is called, it’d help me out a ton. Thanks a lot.
OH MY GOD, YEAH. Thank you so much SOUP.

man that sounds like a really good book. im sorry i don’t know it but when you figure it our i’d love to read it.

What is the name of this fairy tale?
It’s about 3 brothers, all competing against each other for their father’s respect/money, who go off on their own journey to be successful. The older 2 brothers are obnoxious and greedy, and the youngest is humble and kind. It ends with the older brothers having bad things happen to them, and the youngest getting all the glory for being kind.

If anyone has a story anything like this, can you please tell me the name? 10 points!!!

That is the plot to Gross Point Blank.

I would like a brief review of my opening paragraph?
Please don’t go into loads of depth just sum it up in a couple of sentences (and a score out of ten would be nice). It’s young adult action/fantasy so bear that in mind!
Ta :)

Adam crashed into the wire fence and started to climb. He swung himself over the top and sprinted into the darkness of an alleyway, his pursuers fast on his heels. The passage was narrow and dodging the garbage was difficult. Wheelie bins were lying open, their contents spilling out onto the cobbles around them, intent on blocking Adam?s path. In the confined alleyway his pursuer?s footsteps echoed from the cold stone and bounced around the walls. Graffiti began to appear more and more frequently and Adam knew he was heading towards one of the local council estates in the area.
He had already been running from his assailants for over ten minutes but adrenaline had took hold and was pushing him faster than he had ever run before. He was in familiar territory, and knew his way home perfectly, but the thrill of the chase had got his heart pounding, and his head spinning. He spun round a corner and immediately realised he had taken a wrong turning, but there was no chance of retracing his steps, he certainly didn?t want to run into his hunters.
With a quick mental calculation Adam quickly re-adjusted his route and carried on sprinting down the next backstreet. The bricks on the walls either side of him were crumbling and covered with moss, and an occasional weed had broken out through the cobbles beneath his feet. He entered a tunnel, but could see no light at the end. In an instant his vision was cut off. He could hear his heartbeat thudding against his chest and his feet splashing down into the liquid below (which Adam hoped was water). Inside the tunnel the wind outside was partially cut off, but at this time of night, the tunnel?s walls did nothing to stop his hands and feet becoming numb.
He burst out of the tunnel and into the cold night air. He paused for a second in the hope that his assailants had become tired, but a harsh shout echoing out of the tunnel assured him otherwise. Adam set off again, now in the heart of the council estate, but still surrounded at both sides by high brick walls. The shrapnel under his feet had become more vicious, and he could see scatterings of broken glass, needles and other sharp materials. The cobbles were rapidly disappearing as more and more potholes in the ground, and cracks in nearby windows made it clear that local youths were using the cobbles to break windows and loot the goods inside.
Adam glanced back to check if he had lost his pursuers in the maze of the alleyways and stepped into a pothole. His knee twisted and he went down with a cry. If he had indeed lost them, they sure knew where he was now. Adam pulled himself using a hole in the wall that served as a hand-hole and set off staggering down the passage. He was slumped against one of the walls and noticed a door opposite. With the cries of his hunters getting louder and louder he took no chances and collapsed into the garden on the other side of the door, kicking it shut with his good leg.
Adam managed to drag himself towards some nearby bushes in case the attackers checked inside the garden. Almost as if reading his thoughts, the door creaked open and two men sneaked inside. Adam held his breath and slowly edged into the thick of the bush, all the while keeping his eyes on both men.
One was tall and muscular and had a huge round head. The other was a lot smaller but clearly the leader of the two. He signalled towards the front of the house and the huge man edged forward and peered into the windows. The small man began to creep around the outskirts of the garden checking the bushes. He was slim, but still well-built, even for his height. He had a thin face and his features were sharp and jagged. Both men had long greasy hair and fierce stubble around their jaw line. As the smaller man approached Adam picked out a pair of beady amber eyes and gasped. If it was who he thought it was, he was in big trouble.

Wow. Believe me that’s a lot coming from me. 10/10! You’ve some how managed to get the balance between action and description right. ‘if it was who he thought it was, he was in big trouble.’ That was my favorite bit, it really made me want to read more. if you want some more reviews of it post it on the young writers forum. Good luck with your writing! x
xxxsilver wingsxxx | Feb 04, 2010

It’s good, especially the way you open with enough to engage the reader’s attention. The descriptions are succinct which is good for the tone and pace of the piece. It could be quite interesting to see where you go from here, it’s certainly intriguing as to why he is being chased. I can’t really find much to critique at this point, so out of 10 I would probably go for an 8. Keep at it because it shows promise

The definition of absolute evil?
There is a place, that is a nursery school, but it has a nasty secret.

There are halls of absolute darkness, darker than black, darker than a black-hole, darker than hell.
Small children have been known to walk down these corridors into this darkness; then the staff would hear a blood-curdling shriek, run to rescue them and would find no trace of them when they turned on the light. They would never be found again.

There were nasty stories floating about regarding these corridors.
Stories of hidden trap doors, and mysterious holes that would appear and disappear in the floor.

People would have dreams about walking down these corridors, and falling into pits.
There they would find molten lava at the bottom, and fire that burned with temperatures of infinity degrees centigrade; where small children would burn for eternity.
This was a place know as ‘The place!"
One you fell in, you cannot get out.

Some maintenance men were one day decorating the corridors one July afternoon, only to find a pile of ash and a babies bottle covered in blood.
Then the staff realized what the screams were of the disappearing children; it was them falling into a pit of fire through a hole that disappears when you turn on the light. They will be screaming in agony of fires of infinity degrees centigrade in another dimension, for the rest of eternity.

What do you think to that TRUE story?

Is taking a multivitamin daily bad for you?
I have been taking a Centrum Performance multivitamin every day for the past 2 weeks and I have noticed that my urine is much darker in color than it is normally. Normally, because I drink so much water every day, it is almost clear but lately it is a definite yellow. Sorry if this info grosses you out, I figured it might help. I have also been taking 2 omega3’s, 2 osteo biflex to help me with my knee pain ( I tore my left minisci playing football a year ago but don’t want to get surgery unless it becomes really bad) which it helps greatly. On occasion I take 1 garlic pill for the general health of my heart and 1-2 acai extract and 1-2 green tea extract when I can remember. These past few days has just been osteo biflex, omegas, and vitamin and its dark in color.
Is this bad for me? To take all these vitamins only to piss them out?

I am 21 years old btw.

Not uncommon whatsoever - its because you are giving your body more vit c and vit b what ever your body doesnt need gets flushed out by your urine - no worries

I would really recommend ANYTHING by Jodi Picoult.

Her books Nineteen Minutes, and The Pact are the best books I have ever read.

I also liked The Host by Stephenie Meyer (Twilight author.) The book is so much different from Twilight, and I thought it was actually better than the Twilight series.

I also enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. They do have some adult content though. Idk if you mind sex scenes, but the books are really easy and good reads.

Hi Becca,

If you have read My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Piccoult, you might like her book, Nineteen Minutes. It’s a story about bullying and a high school shooting. The author does an incredible job of moving the story line forward.
Hope this helps.
