Invisible Circus, The
Invisible Circus, The (2001)

IMDB rating: 5.50

Plot: In 1975, at age 18, Phoebe is unhappy. When she was about 10, her father died of leukemia; her older sister Faith became a political radical, left for Europe with her boyfriend Wolf, and commits suicide in Portugal a year later. Phoebe, who has romantic ideas about both her father and Faith, decides to trace Faith’s steps, find Wolf, and learn what really happened. She finds Wolf in Paris, and he tells her stories of Faith’s radical activities, including joining the Red Army in Berlin. Phoebe has visions of her sister, seems close to madness, and may be headed for suicide herself. It’s the trip to the cliffs of Portugal that will make the difference: breakthrough or breakdown?

not a question just thought i'd post it lol?
just so you know these are some debate topics that have been resolved

Resolved: Superman would defeat Luke Skywalker even if Skywalker had two lightsabers.
Resolved: If stranded on a desert island, having books you?ve never read would be better than having books you?ve already read.
Resolved: Washing your feet in the shower is pointless, as it is safe to assume they get washed from residual soapy water as you cleanse the rest of your body.

Resolved: Craisins are better than raisins.
Resolved: Slumdog Millionaire was just OK.
Resolved: A month-old polar bear cub has what it takes to kill an elderly elephant.
Resolved: Attics are scarier than basements.
Resolved: It would be better to have the ability to fly, even if you could only fly as fast as you could walk and you would get easily tired, than to have the ability to turn invisible for 14 minutes every month.
Resolved: Stairs are more important than doors.
Resolved: Nicolas Cage is probably a normal guy in real life.
Resolved: The phrase ?Believe you me? doesn?t make sense.
Resolved: Girls with bangs look hot.
Resolved: Recumbent bicycles are stupid.
Resolved: Eating lip gloss isn?t a big deal.
Resolved: Radiohead is better than Nirvana ever was.
Resolved: The United States should invest in jet pack technology and alternative jet pack fuels.
Resolved: Making out with Mona Lisa would be better than making out with The Girl with the Pearl Earring.
Resolved: Red Bull should make caffeinated lunch meat.
Resolved: No one looks good in black jeans.
Resolved: Trampolines are only fun for about an hour.
Resolved: The United States should pass a law that says it?s OK for each citizen to kill one person and get away with it.
Resolved: Buffy the Vampire Slayer is much better than Twilight.
Resolved: If all cat owners put their cats in water for ten minutes a day, every day for a few thousand years, cats would eventually learn not only to love water, but to thrive in it, thus creating a very real catfish.
Resolved: There?s no way you can jump over a parking meter.
Resolved: It is better to eat a live spider than a booger sandwich made from the boogers of strangers.
Resolved: If you dug a tunnel through the center of the earth and out the other side, and then jumped into that tunnel, you would yo-yo back and forth through the tunnel (coming out the other side and then falling back into the tunnel) for the rest of eternity.
Resolved: The mom from the Family Circus comic strip is probably crazy in bed.
Resolved: Werewolves should not have super-strength because dogs are not stronger than humans. So, if anything, werewolves should be weaker than humans.
Resolved: Given the right role, Winona Ryder could win an Academy Award.
Resolved: Curious George is kind of an a**hole, if you think about it.
Resolved: Jack Black, armed with a book of matches, could defeat Jeremy Piven, armed with the serrated edge of an aluminum foil box.
Resolved: A bag of Doritos and a bottle of ice tea counts as breakfast.

which ones do you agree or disagree with?
:D

First, I must comment : I actually READ every bit of that, and must say it’s the funniest thing I’ve seen on P&S in ages!

To qualify my answer as an answer, I agree :
Resolved: A bag of Doritos and a bottle of ice tea counts as breakfast.
Resolved: The mom from the Family Circus comic strip is probably crazy in bed.
Resolved: It is better to eat a live spider than a booger sandwich made from the boogers of strangers.
..and probably more, but I won’t bore you with all of my opinions.
Strongly disagree:

Resolved: The United States should pass a law that says it?s OK for each citizen to kill one person and get away with it.
Resolved: Buffy the Vampire Slayer is much better than Twilight. (Both suck equally)
Resolved: No one looks good in black jeans. (Only Johnny Cash and I look good in black jeans, though he looked better in them when he was alive!)

My congratulations for something that literally made me lol !

There is a lot of truth to this what do you think ?
"I’m Tired" by Robert A. Hall

I’ll
be 63 soon.
Except for one semester in college when jobs were
scarce, and a six-month period when I was between jobs but
job-hunting every day, I’ve worked hard, since I was 18.
Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour
weeks, and haven’t called in sick for seven or eight years.
I make a good salary, but I didn’t inherit my job or my
income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there’s no
retirement in sight, and I’m tired. Very tired.

I’m
tired
of being told that I have to "spread the wealth around" to people
who don’t have my work ethic. I’m tired of being told the
government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give
it to people too lazy or stupid to earn it.

I’m
tired
of being told that I have to pay more taxes to "keep people in
their homes." Sure, if they lost their jobs or got sick,
I’m willing to help. But if they bought McMansions at
three times the price of our paid-off, $250,000 condo, on
one-third of my salary, then let the left-wing Congress-critters who
passed Fannie and Freddie and the Community Reinvestment Act that
created the bubble, help them with their own money.

I’m
tired
of being told how bad America is by left-wing millionaires like
Michael Moore, George Soros, and Hollywood entertainers who live
in luxury because of the opportunities America offers. In thirty
years, if they get their way, the United States will have the economy of
Zimbabwe, the freedom of the press of China , the crime and violence of
Mexico, the tolerance of Iran for Christian people, and the
freedom of speech of Venezuela . Won’t multiculturalism be
beautiful?

I’m
tired
of being told that Islam is a "religion of peace,"
when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing
their sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honor";
of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering
Christians and Jews because they aren’t "believers"; of Muslims burning
schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for
"adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little
girls, all in the name of Allah, because the Qur’an
and Shari’a law tell them to.

I
believe
"a man should be judged by the content of his character, not
by the color of his skin.." I’m tired of being told
that "race doesn’t matter" in the post-racial world of Obama, when
it’s all that matters in affirmative-action jobs, lower college
admission and graduation standards for minorities (harming
them the most), government contract set-asides, tolerance for the
ghetto culture of violence and fatherless children that hurts
minorities more than anyone, and in the appointment of US Senators
from Illinois.

I
think
it’s very cool that we have a black president and that a
black child is doing her homework at the desk where Lincoln wrote
the emancipation proclamation. I just wish that it
was someone
who believes more in freedom and the individual, and less arrogantly of
an all-knowing government.

I’m
tired
of a news media that thinks Bush’s fundraising and inaugural
expenses were obscene, but that think Obama’s, at triple the cost, were
wonderful; that Bush exercising daily was a waste of presidential time,
but Obama exercising is a great example for the public to control
weight and stress; that picked over every line of Bush’s military
records, but never demanded that Kerry release his; that slammed
Palin, with two years as governor, for being too inexperienced for
VP, but touted Obama with three years as senator as
potentially the best president ever. Wonder why people are
dropping their subscriptions, or switching to Fox News? Get a clue.
I didn’t vote for Bush in 2000, but the media and
Kerry drove me to his camp in 2004.

I’m
tired
of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures"
we must let Saudi Arabia use our oil money to fund mosques and
madrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in America , while no
American group is allowed to fund a church, synagogue, or religious
school in Saudi Arabia to teach love and tolerance.

I’m
tired
of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global
warming, which no one is allowed to debate. My wife and I
live in a two-bedroom apartment and carpool together five miles to our
jobs. We also own a three-bedroom condo where our daughter and
granddaughter live. Our carbon footprint is about 5% of Al Gore’s, and
if you’re greener than Gore, you’re green enough.

I’m
tired
of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help
support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did
a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff

Amen.

Murder by Decree
Murder by Decree (1979)

IMDB rating: 7.00

Plot: Sherlock Holmes is drawn into the case of Jack the Ripper who is killing prostitutes in London’s East End. Assisted by Dr. Watson, and using information provided by a renowned psychic, Robert Lees, Holmes finds that the murders may have its roots in a Royal indiscretion and that a cover-up is being managed by politicians at the highest level, all of whom happen to be Masons. Homes races to save the life of Annie Crook who has been forcibly incarcerated in an insane asylum and that of her friend Mary Kelly, in whom she has entrusted her secret.

For a god that is supposedly all loving, he sure does do a lot of name calling of his creation don't you think?
Romans 1:28-32
"Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them"

And this is just after he got done explaining how ample the evidence is for his existence.

Romans 1:18-20
"The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities?his eternal power and divine nature?have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."

Aren’t these some rather demented and hate filled passages?

Where did you think the christians feel they earned the entitlement to tell people they are sinners, have no morals, will burn in hell etc from? A few christians are kindly but most think they are something special and different, well they are different, they are more filled with hatred than any group I know, many are really nasty. Great example to follow hey?

I felt like asking a question.?
I’m a person who felt like asking a question so here it is
i’m adopted and i have no idea who my birth parents on and i dont know if i should ask people about my birth parents because everytime i want to it feels really akward so when im older i think im going to set myself a goal to find my birth parents but i dont know if i should any suggestions???

I am adopted as well and to tell you the truth I don’t really feel the need to find my birth parents. I don’t think they would want to meet me, or it would cause problems. What are you going to do, just meet them say hi and then be off to your life again. It would be hard to start a relationship with someone who was your real parents. I think you should just be happy with the people who are taking care of you now and happy in knowing they loved you so much that they could let someone else adopt you. Its probably the hardest decision that a parent could do, there was a point where my birth mother called off the adoption and then she called the attorney and said she still wanted to because she knew she couldn’t take care of my, she was only 17 at the time and my father had left so she had no way of taking care of me so this was the only option other than abortion and I am glad she lived me enough to no do that.
GundamN3R????? | Mar 17, 2010

That’s something you have to decide for yourself.

If it were me, I’d want to know about my birth parents.

Right now, I’d try to find out what I could, so that if I decided that I wanted to know more in the future, then I’d have some place to start. In other words, the people who are around you now, who know the most about your birth parents, may not be there years from now, or they may not remember as much then as they do now, or some of the records and such will have gotten older and harder to trace in future years. So I’d ask for as much info now as I could, even though you don’t have to contact them now or do anything about it.

It will always probably feel awkward, no matter how old you are when you ask, because you are asking people who care about you (your adopted parents), about people who have a strong tie to you even though they are strangers.
elby | Mar 17, 2010

I felt like answering a question, so I clicked on yours. You have every right to be curious about your birth parents. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and if your adopted parents don’t want to talk about, do exactly as you said, look into when you are older and have the resources.
hmbarney | Mar 17, 2010

how old are ya? I would like to say… it’s normal to feel akward about this.. I mean it’ll be akward even if your finding out for the 1st time when your like 40 or 90… it’ll feel akward when your hella young as well.. don’t feel it’s a bad thing…. just note that the people who are taking care of you now care about you. I bet if you ask the question they’ll provide what they got to you. There’s ways of getting the answers.. through them… the foster place… and more.. so if they pull the parents die’n through a car crash crap it’s always an alturnative to find out the real story… maybe their alive. maybe thier actually your ant and uncle… maybe in a state next to you… who knows… think about the whole… questions normally asked by people… like.. Hows life? whats your name? would you mind chill’n with me? I wanna know more about you. when can we meet? Why did you give me up? (More than likely it could be a I had no choice type of deal) Do I have any brothers and sisters? can I meet the rest of the family? how did you guys meet? whats your favorite place to go eat?

Help! I have reading block =(?
For the past year I’ve only read a couple of books, I’ve enjoyed.
-the harry potter series.
-the Jane Austen Books.

I think I enjoy them for there clever use of wit and I feel submerged in their worlds.

I’ve read a few popular books too which I HAVEN’T enjoyed:

-Twilight series. Didn’t hook me at all. It was torture to read through those books.
-Some of the Tamora Pierce books, like the wild magic series but I found the grammar and punctuation appalling and the plots really formulaic and lame.
-The Bronte sisters. Though I found them boring because there was no wit in their books and I didn’t find that engaging. Reading their books was hard.
-Terry Pratchett’s Discworld but I couldn’t even finish the first chapter of that book!
-Hate shakespeare

Please help and recommend me some good books.
If my movie tastes help I like requiem for a dream, trainspotting, american beauty, donnie darko, and i watch lost and house md.

Well of course you would not like those books (some would object to our shared dislike of Shakespeare, but it doesn’t matter). Just go to the Barnes and Noble Classics section on the internet, and choose three random books. The chances are very high that one of them is bound to be lovely. You don’t have to purchase them, just choose the three books at random and go to a library.

Haunted Mansion, The (2003)

IMDB rating: 4.90

Plot: On the day of their anniversary, workaholic and real estate agent Jim Evers and his wife Sara receive a strange phone call from a man called Ramsley. He requests that Sara come to the mysterious Gracey Manor. Jim decides to turn it into an opportunity to check out a possible gold-mine in real estate, but to please Sara, he claims it is a “family trip”, bringing the kids along. Once there, Ramsley the butler insists that they stay, for a big storm is on the way. The Evers are introduced to Master Gracey, who seems strangely obsessed with Sara. Jim goes off to talk to Gracey about selling, but ends up in a secret passage instead. The kids follow a floating ball to the attic, where they see a painting of a woman who looks just like Sara! Jim and the kids eventually discover the mansion’s dark secret from Madame Leota, a talking head in a crystal ball. She tells them that Sara is in danger and to save her, they must “lead the ghosts to the light.” After some spooky adventures and surprises, the family manages to save the manor and Sara, all while learning a valuable lesson about togetherness.

What do you think of this book snip I wrote?
Here, I don’t want this to be copied or stolen, but I will give you a peek. Do you think this is a good story, or just something i personally like that I wrote? I appreciate it!

David Reynolds lay on the ground, motionless. His pale complexion dyed an unsightly shade of purple, deprived of the blood that surrounded him in a gory puddle. His eyes were fragile as glass, broken by the tears that fell off his rounded cheeks. A scream escaped him, echoing through the bouncing halls. The music stopped with an eerie screech.
It was a Saturday. The 14th of February, year 1954, the night of the Valentine?s Day Ball at the infamous Branboux Mansion.
David Reynolds?s last breath had vanished into the stale air that surrounded him. The shallow pool of cold emptiness around him was still aside from the heavy panting of his killer.
A wine glass slipped from the hands of a horrified guest and shattered on the marble floors of the ballroom entrance, breaking the lingering silence that had shaken the mansion into wordless terror.
Screams erupted from every corner of vast ballroom; calls of sorrow, shock and horror were yelled from panic-stricken mouths of every socialite in attendance. In a snap of fate, the ballroom had been set ablaze with panic and fright.
A vile murderer stood at the head of the corpse that was once David Reynolds, his head shaking with laughter.
He unmasked himself.
Rewind five hours earlier. The Branboux mansion sat unearthed, blissfully unaware of the horror that would soon devour a night of seemingly harmless chatter and dancing into a fiery pit of chaos and destruction.
Isis Chandler stared into the glossy polish of the mirror she was sitting in front of. Her stained lips turned up at the corners, and the girl sitting in front of her mirrored her gesture. A content giggle broke the eerie silence that hung in the frigid air of Isis?s chamber.
She was dressed in a champagne gown, primping for the ball she had dreamed of attending ever since she had received her very first Valentine?s Day card.
?Miss Chandler?? A desolate voice questioned, clouding her frustration with despair.
?Layne.? Isis replied in grim satisfaction.
Layne stood motionlessly at the door of her eldest?s sister. ?We were supposed to leave tonight.? Her words condemned Isis in dreary frustration.
?But now we?re not.? Isis replied coldly, stringing a strand of pearls around her neck.
The floorboards creaked.
?Layne!? Isis growled. ?Go away! Please leave me alone, this is my night, my last night.? She smiled at her own reflection, trying to shut away her depression.
?Why are you so happy about this?? She questioned quietly, her voice darkening with a morbid thought. Her eyes turned glossy.
Isis closed her eyes, shutting away the image of perfection sitting in front of her. ?About what?? Vulnerability colored her stance. In an instant, her presence melted from a soulless demon into a living creature. She sighed almost inaudibly.
?Dad, this mansion, this dance?? Layne?s voice trailed off coldly, unresponsive to her sister?s depression.
?Isis?? A fragile voice squeaked from behind her closed door.
Layne sighed as her last sister entered the battleground of the argument between her and Isis.
?Layne?? Rosalina spoke quietly in a breakable tone, tears dripping from her polished eyelashes.
?Rose? What?s wrong with you? Are you getting ready for the dance? it?s nearly four!? Isis froze again in an instant, her vulnerability snapped in half by the prick of her vicious finger.
?I?m really don?t think we should go tonight Isis. With the money, and our father, and David?? She squeaked, ducking her head for protection.
Isis?s face boiled into wordless fury.
?Have you,? She spoke slowly and wrathfully. ?lost,? Her eyes shut. ?your right mind??
Suddenly, her vision was restored.
Rosalina was pinned into a polished corner, threatened by the vile words of her eldest sister.
?Isis!? Layne roared, seeing for the first time the broiling red in her sister?s eyes. ?Father died three days ago, and our fortune perished with him. David is haunting us for the last pennies we have, and he is going to the ball tonight. We need to leave London, England for that matter, pack up my baby and mother, and be on our way to the states.? Layne was nearly screaming she was growing to hysterical. ?There isn?t any time for this dance! There isn?t any time for this conversation! It?s over Isis! All we have is our lives and the clothes on our backs! Don?t threaten that that we have!?
Rosalina broke into sudden tears, clawing at her sister?s tightening grip on her shoulders.

Thank you for any comments!
Thank you! However, the ‘pale’ and ‘purple’ thing was not a mistake persay. I am saying ‘his pale complextion’ that has nothing to do with the attack, just his natural skin color. Obviously it was unclear, I feel an edit coming on!

As far as the mansion sitting unearthed, it is a refrence to a phrase my teacher used, this can also be changed.

The conversation is a bit confusing. Being grimly satisfied is a refrence to her contentment with her appearence. She is grim, but satisfied.

The ‘battle ground’ is a refrence to the tenseness in the room.

Thank you so much!

I like it, but you use the word "Polished" alot.

I enjoyed reading this.

Your guy can’t be pale AND "an unsightly shade of purple". You also specifically describe that his blood is all over the ground, so pale it is.

"The Branboux mansion sat unearthed" - was it an archaeological dig site?

What is a "desolate voice" exactly?

The conversation at the end is hard to follow.

your prose is fanstastic. you really went that extra mile using colourful vocabularly to spice up the scene. it flows nicely
you have the beginnings of really solid characters. each one with there own sharp personality, quirks, desires, priorities, history.
there isn’t enough here to gain an acurate grasp of the plot, but it seems like it will be exciting and gripping. Twisted.
you did a fabulous job by starting right in the thick of the action to grasp the audiences attention, then going back to give vital backround information.
i would love to read more!

and now for the constructive critisisms :P
mostly it is just word choice because everything else is solid.

the line "rewind five hour earlier" is more awkward than any turtle.

if the blood has drained from his face it won’t be purple it will be pale.

"The 14th of February, year 1954, the night of the Valentine?s Day Ball at the infamous Branboux Mansion." TMI!! i know this is for effect, but all this in one sentence is way too much. just knock off one piece of information, preferably the location. include this in another sentence.

"a vile murderer" is a redundancy. don’t use the word vile here please.
when you say the mansion sat unearthed, it makes no sense. i think you are confusing the meaning of the word.

"fiery pit of chaos and destruction." is a little melodramatic. leave it with the fact that they have no idea what’s in store for them. let the reader find out when you get around to it.

"frigid air" why on earth would the air be frigid? let the suspense build itself, you are pushing too hard.

"A desolate voice questioned, clouding her frustration with despair.
?Layne.? Isis replied in grim satisfaction." all these emotions don’t add up. is she frustrated? despairing? grimly sastisfied? she can’t be all three. why is she grimly sastisfied at all? a moment before she was giggling at her reflection then all of a sudden she was frustrated? if you arent refering to isis at all then you need to make it clear.

"the battleground of the argument" as far as i could tell they weren’t really arguing. save the strong language for a point where the metaphor will really be needed to describe the scene.

"threatened by the vile words of her elder sister" not the right wording. she’s not threatened, she’s frightened perhaps, but it wasn’t a threat. and the words weren’t really all that vile.

Good luck!

Can someone edit my Christmas story so far?
I grumbled as I staggered up the stairs, it wasn’t fair that I was stuck at home on Christmas Eve with my younger siblings. Once I reached my room, I slammed the door and plopped onto my bed. ?Why do mom & dad get to go out, it?s just not fair? I muttered. ?Bye honey, we’ll be back by 12:30? my mom shouted from downstairs. Once I heard the door close, I picked up the phone and called my friend, Jace.
A female spoke, ?Hello?? I wasn’t able to hear what she was saying with the music blasting from the background. She yelled into the phone this time ?HELLO!? She hung up, just before I could speak. I figured if I was unable to reach him, I might as well go to his house. I carefully crept across the hallway and down the stair. Suddenly I heard a loud thump coming from the living room. At first I thought it was nothing so I continued to make my way to the front door. As I reached for my black winter coat, I saw a shadow. It was an unusual figure; shaped like an apple (a large one too) and wore a funny looking hat. I decided to check it out, I tip-toed to the room where the shadow was coming from. I rubbed my eyes to make sure I wasn’t dreaming; in my living room was a jolly old man that goes by the name Saint Nick. I hid behind the couch peaking every second or so. Then a strange looking ball rolled towards me. I quickly picked it up and carefully observed it; it was a small silver ball with several buttons. My curiosity got a hold of me and so I pressed the biggest button there was.
At first it started glowing and shimmering and stopped all of a sudden. I noticed the shadow of Santa stopped moving so I decided to take a peak. He wasn?t moving, nothing was, the star on top of the tree stopped gleaming, the tree stopped swaying lie it usually did and most importantly Santa stood frozen with the same facial expression. I quietly walked to where he stood and poked his belly, still nothing! I looked down at the ball I held in my hands and observed it once more, this time focusing on each button. I pressed the smallest button this time and nothing happened. Suddenly, a ?tingling? feeling took over my body and so I close my eyes. I slowly open my eyes and see I?m standing on my roof of my own house!

I know its not good, but I’m only 12 and its for english lol

You’ve got a couple of typos, but it’s good. I like it.

It should be "I carefully crept across the hallway and down the stairs."
There should be a period, not a , between "I decided to check it out . I tip-toed to the room where the shadow was coming from.

I would change "Then, a strange looking ball rolled towards me"
Maybe change it too "Suddenly, a small spherical shape rolled toward me, bumping into me new winter boots sent by Grandma (she forgets which day Christmas is on sometimes). Curiously, yet cautiously, I quietly bent down and picked it up…"

", the tree stopped swaying liKe it usually did…"

"Suddenly, a "tingling" feeling took over my body and so I close my eyes."
You should make it maybe…
"Suddenly, a tingling sensation flooded my body, making my eyes pinch shut. Slowly, I opened one eye, then the next. I glanced around to see that I was standing on the roof of my own house!"

Good luck! I hope this helped!

mine please? thanks so much!
