What does this lyric mean?
This is a choir song "Old Fashioned World" lyric.
I don’t understand some parts of this because of my poor English and knowledge.
I’d like you to help me!!
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
I grew up in an old fashioned world where people were kind,
And you could even make a mark in the world if Providence so designed,
Didn’t need a lawyer to quarrel, Every story had a moral, Your wages were earned,
So march, sleepyheads, get yourselves up to bed, only children and dreamers rebel,
For your fellowman takes it all if he can and one day you’ll inherit his hell
I cast in my pearl
I looked up from a curious world, all sugar and spice,
Oh, you could even fall in love with the world and pick every daisy twice,
Choir boys and ice cream on Sundays, those were good days, those were fun days,
But we live and learn,
So march, sleepyheads, get yourselves up to bed, only children and dreamers rebel,
For your fellowman ruins all that he can and you’re soon to inherit his hell,
I cast in my pearl for an old fashioned world
So march, sleepyheads, get yourselves up to bed,
Only children and dreamers rebel, For your fellowman holds the world in his hand,
but his heart turned it into a hell, so cast in your pearl
————————————————————————————————————————————————
1, Is this about discrimination?
2, Who are "you" and "your fellowman"?
3, What does "cast in your pearl" mean?
4, Does "march" mean "protest march" here?
5, What does "get yourself up to bed" mean? To get death penalty?
6, What does "pick every daisy twice" mean?
Thank you!
seems that my question made people uncomfortable…i’m very sorry.
my english and knowledge is poor because i’m japanese, grown up in japanese, studied english as a second language.
i didn’t mean anything but i wanted to know what this lyric says.
^?grown up in JAPAN
see? I’m not a native speaker.
though i can understand all what you said and what you meant to me.
Anyway thank you all.
I understand how much I was lured away and how beautiful this lyric means.
If your English is poor, then you will find this impossible to understand. It is difficult even for people with excellent English. First, it seems to be a song about disenchantment, and the loss of innocent enjoyment. You, and your fellowman is you yourself and everyone else in the world.
"Cast in your pearl" is a message for you to give up - stop being a child or a dreamer. What the song is saying is - the world is a bad place- everyone is doomed, so stop being so hopeful. It is a song of the loss of hope and the coming of hell on earth. No, I do not think it is about protest. It is telling you to give up and join the modern, somewhat nasty present reality of hell on earth.

You have to put yourself back in time when these lyrics were written…I presume late 1800s to early 1920s, when we were still innocent, happy and believed in the American Dream. This meant that if you went to bed early, worked hard all day, you would earn money and reap the rewards of a happy life.
Even the lyrics are pointing to an earlier time when you could easily fall in love with the world (no dictators, no vast problems in any one area, etc). Pick every daisy twice means that you had the time to pick daisies and enjoy it. Ever hear the phrase, "Stop and smell the roses /daisies"?
Referring to Choir boys meant going to church & people did not work on Sundays, they had their meals & went for ice cream cones. He/ She is reflecting on their childhood. But, "we live and learn" means that when you grow up, you learn that not everything goes your way or that life is easy.
So march, sleepyheads just means go up to bed and sleep for only children & daydreamers don’t want to go to bed but stay up late. He/ she is saying that others can ruin your life if you let them. Saying that to grow up can be hard (hell) to face.
I cast in my pearl for an old fashioned world means he votes for the way it used to be…not for how it is now because it’s tougher & harder.
It’s about life from sweet childhood to facing the real world…discrimination has nothing to do with the lyrics. You and your fellowman are the people he is addressing or singing his words to —to you –to me–to anyone who listens. I explained about "casting in your pearl" and march is an old fashioned way to say go, walk, etc. In grammar school, the nuns used to tell us to march to the play yard or back to the school room. You really are confusing old time lyrics with the world of today. Your # 5 is way off –really way off. It means go up to bed and dream while you can without worry, while you are a child. I explained about the daisies.
You really are reading way too much into old fashioned lyrics..Your trying to match up today’s world with these innocent lyrics and it just does not connect.
Think about the fact that way in the past people thought America was the "Land of Opportunity" and that all was good in life if you lived a good life & treated your fellowman as you would want to be treated. Neighbors helped each other out; they didn’t even lock their doors; they trusted each other; they worked with their neighbors to make their neighborhoods good. Crime was nothing like it is today & remember there was no TV, movies were very scarce & people respected authority figures, their government, their friends, families and themselves. Of course there were some criminals but nothing like it is today. Drugs were not a problem either. Try and read some good old fashioned books or watch some old Andy Hardy movies to see what America looked like a long time ago.
I can’t believe you got discrimination, protest marches and the death penalty out of this song!
