What are some suggestions for a school musical with cool and challenging trumpet parts?
Ok So at my high school we do not know what musical we are going to do this year. I want to suggest something that will have a cool part in it for me (lead trumpet). Two years ago we did Thoroughly Modern Millie, which was really fun and challenging to play. Last year we did Brigadoon, which I couldn’t care less for. Let me know what you think.
- West Side Story - have a listen to the trumpet section screaming at the top of the Blues section of the Dance At The Gym sequence
- Anything Goes - the whole show is brilliant musically, but the lead trumpet has a major solo in Blow Gabriel Blow where it’s almost like another singer, singing a duet with Reno
- Sweet Charity (although your school may not like the content of the show!)
- Gypsy
- Jesus Christ, Superstar - musically I reckon it’s Lloyd Webber’s most original show - it’s great, plus the opening of the title song has a brilliant (and high!) trumpet riff
- Seussical the Musical - terrific fun with some great trumpet parts
- Chess
- Witches of Eastwick
- Chicago
- Cabaret (if the school will let you - somehow I doubt it!!)
